Important 911 Information for VoIP Services

Please Read Carefully

Your telephone service is provided using Voice over Internet Protocol (“VoIP”) technology. VoIP services function differently than traditional landline telephone services, especially during power outages or internet disruptions. Because of these differences, it is important that all customers understand the limitations of 911 emergency calling services.

How 911 Service works with VoIP

When you dial 911 from your VoIP phone, your call is routed to the appropriate emergency response center (Public Safety Answering Point or “PSAP”) based on the Registered Service Address associated with your account.

To help emergency responders locate you quickly, you must ensure your Registered Service Address is accurate and up to date at all times.

Customer Responsibilites

1. Keep Your Service Address Updated

You are responsible for providing and maintaining the correct physical address where your VoIP service is being used.

If you move your phone equipment or use the service at another location, you must notify us immediately and update your Registered Service Address before using the service from the new location.

Failure to update your address may result in emergency services being dispatched to the wrong location.

2. Test Your Service After Installation or Changes

After installation, relocation, internet changes, or equipment replacement, customers should verify that service is functioning properly.

Do not place unnecessary 911 test calls. If you need to test emergency calling functionality, contact our office first for proper procedures.

3. Maintain Power and Internet Connectivity

  VoIP service requires:

  • Electrical power
  • An active internet connection
  • Properly functioning network equipment

If power, internet, or equipment fails, your VoIP phone service — including 911 calling — may not function.

Customers are encouraged to maintain:

  • Battery backup systems (UPS)
  • Secondary internet connections when appropriate
  • Alternate means of contacting emergency services, such as a cellular phone

Limitations o VoIP 911 Service

VoIP 911 service may not function properly under the following circumstances:

  • Loss of electrical power
  • Internet service outages
  • Network congestion
  • Service suspension or disconnection
  • Equipment failure or misconfiguration
  • Failure to maintain accurate address information
  • Relocation of service without updating address records

Additionally, in some situations:

  • Your phone number and location may not automatically display to emergency operators
  • Calls may route to a national emergency call center instead of a local PSAP
  • Emergency personnel may not be able to call you back if the call is disconnected

Multi-Line Telephone Systems (MLTS)

Businesses using multi-line phone systems are responsible for ensuring accurate dispatchable location information is provided for each device or user when required by applicable law, including Kari’s Law and the RAY BAUM’S Act.

This may include:

  • Suite numbers
  • Floor numbers
  • Building identifiers
  • Specific office locations

Text-To-911

Text-to-911 capability may not be available through your VoIP service. Customers should not rely on VoIP texting services for emergency communications unless specifically confirmed as supported in their area.

Always place a voice call to 911 whenever possible.

Acknowledgement

By using this VoIP service, you acknowledge and understand:

  • VoIP 911 service differs from traditional telephone 911 service
  • Service may not function during power or internet outages
  • You are responsible for maintaining accurate location information
  • You should maintain alternate methods for contacting emergency services
